How recognition works

“Pflegefachfrau” and “Pflegefachmann” are protected professional titles in Germany. The authority of the state where you will work checks whether your training is equivalent to the German one: content, hours, practical placements. Three outcomes are possible.

  • Full equivalence: with German B2, police clearance and medical certificate you receive the licence directly.
  • Substantial differences: the authority issues a deficit notice naming the missing areas (often geriatrics, paediatrics, psychiatry, home care). You compensate them through a knowledge test or an adaptation period while already working in Germany.
  • No equivalence: rare, for example with short courses. Then new training is required. We tell you before you apply.
Good to know: four-year Bachelor degrees (Turkey, India B.Sc., Philippines, Latin America) are often assessed as largely equivalent. Most notices concern individual subjects and professional German, not the training as a whole.

Knowledge test or adaptation period

Route 1

Knowledge test

Oral and practical exam at a nursing school on the areas named in the notice, 60 to 90 minutes, can be repeated once. Preparation 2 to 4 months, often with a preparation course. The fast route if knowledge and professional German are solid.

Route 2

Adaptation period

Supervised practice in your facility plus theory at a nursing school, 6 to 12 months, ends with a discussion instead of an exam. The safer route, especially while your German is still growing. You work and earn from day one.

We coordinate

German: your path from A1 to B2

Practice instruction in the nursing team

You need German B2 for the licence. B1 is usually enough to enter, and with a recognition partnership even A2. So you can come earlier and finish B2 in Germany, or reach B2 at home and start sooner as a recognised nurse. We plan both with you.

  • A1 to B1 in your home country: 6 to 10 months, online or with partners on site, often financed by the employer
  • Nursing German: handover, documentation, talking to doctors and relatives; we train this before you travel
  • B2 in Germany: alongside work, usually 3 to 6 months
  • Proof: telc Deutsch B2 Pflege, Goethe or ÖSD

Federal recognition grant: up to €600 of procedure costs (translations, fees) can be reimbursed. We check that with you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for recognition from abroad?

Yes. The authority usually requires an employment contract or a binding job offer from the state. That is why we place the employer first and then file the application.

What does the procedure cost?

Authority fees of €100 to €600 depending on the state, plus translations (€200 to €600) and the language certificate. Many employers reimburse part of it, and the federal recognition grant up to €600. The placement itself costs you nothing.

Is the recognition valid throughout Germany?

Yes. The licence is valid nationwide even though a state authority issues it.

How much German do I need?

The German states require B2 for the full licence. For entry into the adaptation period most states accept B1; with a recognition partnership even A2 is enough. Many employers finance the course; we connect you with subsidised courses in your country and online.
